City council members helped make a Christmas program focused on toys in La Cygne a success, but people in need are asking for a lot more.

During a city council meeting on Wednesday, Beth Smith, a librarian at La Cygne Elementary School talked about the success of the Christmas Sharing program that was introduced to the city council in November. In the past the project has been primarily for food, but Smith wanted to add toys and gifts for children. Smith said 65 children and 23 families are involved in the project. The program allows donations to provide gifts to children in need. The names are confidential. She asked for a storage space, and the council decided to take it a step further by donating $500 during the November meeting. The idea came from council member Jerry Boone.

“I’ve had a overwhelming response,” Smith said.

When the project began, Smith said she was focusing on the “want” side including toys and children-type things.

She said beds were a big item on the children’s wish list due to children sleeping on the floor. She later contacted Mattress Firm in Olathe about the sales of mattresses. Smith said she was able to get four mattresses and two box springs at $300 each.

Besides furniture and bed requests, Smith said there was requests for dental work that included a dental filling.

She said the Paola School of Dance offered scholarships to three children for sessions leading up to an recital.

“This is crazy and goes beyond your thoughts of Barbie dolls and trucks,” Smith said on the success of the project.

Smith said there have been 100 wrapped gifts from money that came from the city council and other donations.
