A Friday hearing for a Linn County juvenile charged with the shooting death of his father has been rescheduled for later this month. Judge Richard Smith was unable to preside over the Friday hearing because of an illness. The trial is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. Dec. 22. In September, Christopher Wottlin, 16, of Centerville was charged with unintentional but reckless second-degree murder. Wottlin allegedly shot and killed Robert Wottlin, his 52-year-old father. On Oct. 28, he pleaded guilty to one count of involuntary manslaughter in front of Judge Smith. Smith asked if Wottlin suffered from mental illness. Wottlin’s attorney, J. Ryan Hare, said the 16-year-old is depressed and is not on medication or any other drugs. After Wottlin pleaded guilty, Smith told him his punishment can range from probation to being placed in a youth correctional facility until the age of 25. Smith recommended Wottlin be placed in the custody of Juvenile Justice Authority. On Sept. 1, Robert Wottlin was found dead by Linn County Sheriff’s Department officials at his home on 1077 Road, across from Whitaker Aggregates’ Centerville quarry. Wottlin’s 13-year-old brother was also present when the shooting occurred. Wottlin was arrested at the time.
