GARNETT — Jayhawk-Linn wrestlers Caleb Jackson, Alan Johnson and Quincy Hodges continued their hot starts to the season Saturday.

Jackson placed second at 275 pounds, Johnson third at 215 pounds and Hodges fourth at 160 pounds at the Garnett Optimist Club Tournament.

After receiving a first-round bye, Jackson pinned each of his next two opponents. Those wins advanced Jackson into the 275-pound championship, where he was pinned by Parsons’ Jeff O’Daniel. With his 2-1 showing at Garnett, Jackson improved to 9-1 on the season.

Johnson was bounced into the consolation bracket after being pinned in the 215-pound semifinals, but rebounded and won his next two matches by fall, including in just 34 seconds over Parsons’ Scott Bedore in the third-place match.

Hodges went 3-2, including wins by fall in his first two matches. His second loss was by default since he had already reached the five-match limit in the tournament. He improved to 10-2.

Trevor Laporte (125 pounds) and Jared Avery (145) each went 1-3. Jayhawk-Linn, with 69 points, finished eighth in the team standings.

Central Heights

Central Heights’ JD Johnson placed third at 152 pounds. Chad Platt (189) won one of three matches. Justin Ennis (125) and David Green (275) both went 0-3.

The Vikings, with 16 points, finished 10th in the team standings.

Every Viking has recorded at least one win on the season.

Ennis, a senior who is now in his third season wrestling for Central Heights, won his first career match Dec. 6 at the Mission Valley tournament. The victory was a 7-5 decision.

“His spirit is undeniable. He tries as hard as anyone,” Central Heights coach Randy Hinderliter said. “In football, whether it was 200 yards or two miles, Justin always finished and was not last to do so.”

Johnson placed fifth. Ennis, Platt and Green each went 1-2 in the tournament.

Central Heights, with 21 points, finished 14th in the team standings.

On Dec. 2, Central Heights opened the season with a double dual against J.C. Harmon and Tri-City Christian in Raytown, Mo.

Johnson won both of his matches. Green went 1-1. Ennis lost his only match.

“It is nice to get a couple of competitions under our belt,” Hinderliter said. “It is especially good to have all four of our wrestlers earn a win within the first week.”
