Prairie View’s Toby Cornejo didn’t exactly have the shiniest forehead Friday night. He received seven stitches the previous night after being struck in the head.

While his forehead wasn’t looking pretty, it was his long-distance shooting that sparkled.

Cornejo went 5 of 6 behind the 3-point line, finishing with 20 points, in leading the Buffalos to a 47-36 victory over Jayhawk-Linn at the Linn County Basketball Tournament in Mound City.

“He played a great game,” Prairie View coach Tyler Applegate said.

When Cornejo wasn’t scoring, the senior point guard was helping set up Prairie View’s offense. The Buffalos didn’t waste any time getting off to a strong start offensively, outscoring the Jayhawks 16-7 in the first quarter on their way to evening their overall record at 2-2.

“When Jayhawk dropped into a zone we did an excellent job of moving the ball and being patient,” Applegate said.

Applegate praised Cornejo’s ability to not only efficiently operate the offense, but also get free for open shots.
“Toby nailed some open looks and did a great job of not rushing things when all we needed to do was run some clock,” Applegate said.

Keaton Hines chipped in six points and five steals.

Prairie View led 24-19 at halftime, and outscored Jayhawk-Linn 23-17 in the second half.

Taylor Kellerman led the Jayhawks with 10 points and six rebounds. Blake Johanning added eight points.
Cornejo injured his forehead in Thursday’s 39-29 loss to Pleasanton after receiving a blow to the head in the second half. Cornejo went to the locker room to receive treatment. With a bandage wrapped around his head,
he reentered the game shortly after. He finished with six points.

Cornejo drove to the lane for a layup to cut Pleasanton’s lead to 34-29 with 2 minutes, 32 seconds remaining, but the Blu-Jays were able to hold on for the victory.

Garrett Claar and Mark Whitworth led Prairie View with eight points apiece.

Pleasanton’s Tyler Myrick led all scorers with 18 points. He scored in double figures in all three games in the tournament for the Blu-Jays, who went a perfect 3-0 to claim the tournament title.

Myrick recorded 17 points and six rebounds in Pleasanton’s 55-12 rout of Drexel (Mo.) on Dec. 9 to open the tournament. Daniel Barber chipped in nine points and four rebounds.

Barber led the Blu-Jays (4-0) with 11 points and Myrick added 10 points in their 43-41 victory over Jayhawk-Linn Friday.
