BALDWIN — For one half, the Central Heights boys’ basketball team kept pace with Baldwin, the ninth-ranked team in Class 4A, trailing by just nine points at halftime in Friday’s game.

The Bulldogs then showed why they’re one of the top teams in 4A, using an 18-2 surge in the third quarter to pull away for a 52-31 victory, the final game before the Christmas break for both teams.

Russell Hampton led the Vikings with 15 points. Adam Horstick added seven points. Thomas Conaway and Aaron Schaefer each chipped in three points.

It was the end to a tough schedule to the start of the season for the Vikings, in which they faced several Class 4A teams, and they escaped 1-5.

“We knew it was going to be a pretty tough schedule,” Central Heights coach Buddy Welch said. “We needed everyone we had. Injuries caught up to us.”

An unspecified injury kept junior Skye Mills out of the lineup for Friday’s game. Senior Jordan Welch, who averaged 11 points last season, has not suited up at all so far this season. He suffered a torn meniscus during practice before the season.

Welch is expected to return to the lineup when the Vikings return to the court Jan. 6. He will provide a big boost as Central Heights hosts the top-ranked team in Class 1A, Crest.

Coach Welch knows the Christmas break couldn’t have come at a better time, as he hopes his team can use the next couple of weeks to get healthy.

“We’ve got to get healthy,” he said.

The long-time Viking coach believes that his team’s injuries will heal and is excited about the possibilities during the second half of the season.

“We’re going to be all right,” he said. “By the middle of January, we should start getting to where we need to be. We’ll get there.”

Central Heights girls

Like the boys’ team, the Central Heights girls’ basketball team made it a game with Baldwin in the first team, and was locked in an 11-all tie at halftime.

The first few minutes of the second half saw the Bulldogs pick up the intensity, and they went on to outscore
the Vikings 21-13 in the second half and went on to a 32-24 win Friday in Baldwin.

“We did not match Baldwin’s intensity the first few minutes after the (first) half,” Central Heights coach David Clayton said. “We kept battling and had our chances. We turned the ball over too much and did not convert in key situations.”

Marissa Cox led the Vikings with nine points and seven rebounds. Casey Droddy added seven points. Katelin Horstick pulled down nine rebounds.

Central Heights made just 9 of 33 shots (27 percent) from the field.
