Several candidates will be stepping into office for the first time while others retain their positions.

During a forum days before the election, two Linn County sheriff’s candidates squared off. Linn County voters had the opportunity to ask the Republican candidate Paul Filla and Democratic candidate Barry Walker questions before the general election. Some of the topics discussed at the Bunker Hill Community Center in Mound City included the budget, crime, underage drinking and experience.

“One of my thoughts was ‘why are they drinking?”’ Filla said. “Do they have any other activities that keeps them from drinking?”

Walker said the best approach is to start teaching children about the problems of underage drinking in elementary school. He suggested being more harsh on people supplying alcohol on underage drinkers.

“Too many of our kids run away from the cops today. They don’t run to the cops,” Walker said. “I think this a problem. I don’t know where we lost our contact with the kids. We need those kids to know us, trust us and come to us when they see problems like this.”

Walker defeated Filla during the Nov. 4 general election.
