On Sept. 1, Christopher Wottlin, 17, of Centerville was charged with “unintentional but reckless” second-degree murder.

Wottlin allegedly shot and killed Robert Wottlin, his 52-year-old father, during an argument about living with his mother in Johnson County. Wottlin went into his room and fired shots through a closed door.

After the incident occurred, Christopher and his 13-year-old brother tried to revive their father before emergency officials arrived, according to his attorney J. Ryan Hare.

Robert Wottlin was found dead by Linn County Sheriff’s Department officials at his home on County Road 1077, across from Whitaker Aggregates’ Centerville quarry.

On Oct. 28, Wottlin pleaded guilty to one count of involuntary manslaughter in front of Judge Richard Smith. Smith asked if Wottlin suffered from mental illness. Wottlin’s attorney, J. Ryan Hare, said the 16-year-old is depressed and is not on medication or any other drugs.

During a Dec. 22 hearing, Smith suspended a sentence of 36 months in the youth correctional facility with 24 months of after care or parole with the Juvenile Justice Authority. Smith said the sentence is indefinite.

“Our hope is that he goes through the juvenile justice system quickly,” Hare said Dec. 22.

Smith asked for the case to be sent to Johnson County because of the lack of resources in Linn County.

“I think this will do more for Wottlin and his family,” Smith said
