Osawatomie City Manager Bret Glendening said he is expecting an uneventful meeting Jan. 8, when the Osawatomie City Council meets for its first 2009 session.

With the city’s 2009 financial policies and ordinances already having been approved at the council’s December meeting, Glendening said only one agenda item has been posted for the January meeting so far.

“The only thing on the agenda right now is the city’s renewal of participation in the Kansas Municipal Energy Association’s (KMEA) mutual aid program,” Glendening said.

The city manager could not say whether the council would consider taking formal action against the state’s proposal to close Osawatomie Correctional Facility.

However, Jamie Wilson of Osawatomie’s Economic Development Committee said a letter has been drafted to be sent to state legislators arguing against the facility’s closing, and Wilson said the committee will be urging individuals and businesses to contact legislators on its behalf.

“Any polite input by the public will be greatly welcomed,” Wilson said in an e-mail.
