Osawatomie resident Skip Grove always wanted to grow out her hair to donate to Locks Of Love, but she never thought her granddaughter, Shila Fox, would join her in the effort.

“It took a lot of convincing because I was going to cut my hair anyway,” Fox said. “She talked me into it.”

Grove said two of her other granddaughters were originally planning to grow their hair out for Locks Of Love as well but ultimately decided against it.

“They mess with their hair all the time, so they couldn’t stand to grow it out for this long,” Grove said.

Grandmother and granddaughter each grew their hair out for 22 months, and it was uncomfortable at first, especially for Grove.

“My hair hasn’t been this long since 1963,” Grove said.

The women combined to produce three locks of hair totaling 31 inches.

Though many people who choose to donate to Locks of Love are inspired by close friends and family members suffering from cancer, Grove said she had no such motivation and was simply doing it out of the goodness of her heart.

“It’s just something I’ve always wanted to do,” Grove said.

After the haircuts, both women were pleased to have supported a great cause, even if Fox thought her head felt a little bare.

Grove said during the growth period, she discovered how much she liked having long hair.

“I forgot how easy it is to take care of long hair,” Grove said. “I might let it grow long again.”
