In front of a nationally and worldwide-televised audience and a Dolphin Stadium record crowd, Prairie View graduate Brody Eldridge, standing at midfield with the stadium lights being brightly cast upon him and his Oklahoma Sooner teammates, took part in the coin flip before Thursday’s title game. He was one of four team captains for the Sooners.

Oklahoma won the toss and elected to receive, but its high-powered offense was limited to 14 points in a 24-14 loss to the Gators on Thursday. Oklahoma finished 12-2.

Eldridge, a senior, didn’t record any catches in the game, as he is more known for his superior blocking skills, but the honor bestowed upon him as being named a captain demonstrated the respect he’s earned from his teammates and coaching staff. He was also named a team captain before the season.

Eldridge has never been known for piling up the stat sheet, as he recorded just nine receptions for 57 yards and one touchdown in his three seasons with the Sooners. That’s after red shirting his freshman season. His lone touchdown was a 1-yard reception from Heisman-winning quarterback Sam Bradford in Oklahoma’s 61-41 win over Oklahoma State on Nov. 29, 2008 in Stillwater, Okla.

While the ball didn’t come Eldridge’s way Thursday, he had one shining moment before the game. That’s one nobody can take away.
