Dale R. Wiltfong, 62, Alta Vista, Kan., died Thursday, Jan. 15, 2009, at Hospice House in Topeka. He was born Aug. 21, 1946, in Kansas City, Mo., the youngest child of Edgar O. and Barbara Helen Leimkuhler Wiltfong. He was a 1964 graduate of Fontana High School. He was a structural iron worker for 38 years. He later owned and operated Wiltfong Backhoe Service, Prairie Thunder Elk and Prairie Thunder Transportation Inc. He held a pilot’s license, was an auctioneer and held a real estate license. He was an avid pheasant hunter and had a love for restoring old cars, especially convertibles. He could design and build almost anything. He was a member of the Fontana United Methodist Church and Iron Workers Local No. 10 in Kansas City, Mo., a volunteer fireman for the Wakarusa Fire Department, a member and served on the board of directors of the Kansas Elk Breeders Association, and served on the board of directors of the Wabaunsee County Conservation District. He was married to Gladys Daughtery in June 1967. They later divorced. He married Sharon Heidemann on Nov. 13, 1992, in Topeka. She survives of the home. He is also survived by a son, Richard E. Wiltfong of Urbana, Ill.; a brother, George David Wiltfong of De Soto, Kan.; two sisters, Jean Miller of Central Point, Ore., and Sara Cornett of Paola; and two grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and a son, Ronald W. Wiltfong, in 1991. Mr. Wiltfong was cremated. Inurnment was in the Fontana Cemetery.
