It had all the makings of a long evening for the Pleasanton girls’ basketball team. Up 17 points midway through the first quarter of its Jan. 9 game, Rich Hill (Mo.) was having its way with Pleasanton. But the Blu-Jays weren’t about to be embarrassed on their home court. Quarter by quarter, the Blu-Jays picked up their effort on the defensive end, and that helped them chip away at Rich Hill’s lead. Pleasanton finally took its first lead of the game in the fourth quarter in what proved to be an amazing comeback in the 42-38 win. The lead changed hands several times until Darla Snyder sank a pair of free throws with 1 minute, 20 seconds remaining, to give the Blu-Jays a one-point lead — a lead they wouldn’t relinquish. A minute later, she made two more free throws for a three-point lead, and Carlee Campbell then added one of her own with three seconds left, to put the finishing touches on an improbable win. “A great team effort,” Pleasanton coach Ethan Sabine said. Trailing 23-10 after the first quarter, Pleasanton limited Rich Hill to 15 points the rest of the way. Campbell carried the Blu-Jays Jan. 13, scoring 20 points, to go along with seven rebounds and five steals in Pleasanton’s 42-34 win over Northeast-Arma. Rachel Richmond added seven points and eight rebounds.
