There’s nothing like a chili cook-off to chase away the winter blahs.

Served up hot or mild, from seven contestants, pots of homemade chili awaited a very large hungry crowd at the La Cygne Library on Sunday night, hoping their chili would win the competition at the second annual Cabin Fever Reliever fund-raising event.

Ed Behm of Fontana presented three entries, mild, medium and spicy chili.

“Ground chuck, some seasoning and tomatoes,” he said were a few of the typical ingredients, blended just right with jalapenos, that made for a very spicy mixture that was tough to beat.

Janet Reynolds entered a unique white chicken chili made from whipping cream, chicken broth, sour cream, chicken breasts and northern beans.

“A friend in Idaho gave me the recipe two years ago,” Reynolds said.

The response from the crowd was positive.

“I had never tried it, I liked it and am going back for more,” Virginia Chambers said.

The big winners of the night were Lane residents Dean and Marci Hampson, with a thick, meaty chili. The secret ingredient may have been the pork sausage that netted their tip jar $24.68 and won them gift certificates.

Total tips for all the chili entree’s was $64.15, and leftovers were auctioned at the end of the night. Plenty of crackers, cheese, beverages and a dessert stand manned by local Richard Teagarden made the feast even more enjoyable.

Cake walks took place about every 15 minutes with library worker La Veda Riggs collecting $75 in ticket sales from all age groups vying to land on the magic number to win a homemade dessert.

Luxury desserts were later auctioned by Behm, who spent a pretty penny bidding on his favorite cheesecakes.
The big winner of the night, after several bidders waved their arms high, was a scrumptious looking Black Forrest cherry cheesecake going to Mary Heidi, whose daughter Liza had the first taste after paying $40 for the treat.

Cupcakes resembling spaghetti and meatballs, a thick German Chocolate cake and an Éclair pie were only a few of the delectables that had bidders shelling out $291, adding to the $305 donated for the meal. The donations made a contribution to the library for the summer reading program and Library Club scholarship fund.

That wasn’t all. There were also 26 homemade goody baskets of all shapes, sizes and varieties donated for a raffle. Some themes included NASCAR, John Deere, breast cancer awareness, Pampered Chef and Hannah Montana, just to name a few.

Basket winner names were drawn by Heather Reynolds and displayed by Megan Reed. Total basket profits added $737 to the pot, thanks to many local business owners including Bonnie Hobson Day Care, which donated the Disney Pixar basket and a Disney princess basket, and Peoples Telecommunications, which donated a 911 Safety and Rescue basket. Library District 2 even donated a huge basket filled with stuffed animals and Eric Carle books. Many individuals also donated baskets.

Janet Reynolds and Chris Waddell planned and organized the event, and helpers made it an enjoyable evening and a benefit for the entire community.
