La Cygne residents trying to beat the heat this Saturday can find some relief at an ice cream social in the new pavilion in City Park. Hamburgers and hot dogs will be served beginning at 6 p.m., followed by ice cream half an hour later. The event is sponsored by La Cygne United Methodist Church, which will be accepting a fee in the form of nonperishable food or cash donations to benefit its food pantry. Park Board Chairwoman Jodi Wade said the church is encouraging members to bring homemade ice cream. Live music will be provided by the Garnett-area community band, which will start performing at 7 p.m. Those who want to attend are encouraged to bring lawn chairs.
