The public is invited to a 10 a.m. open house today at the new safety rest area at the U.S. Highway 69 and Kansas Highway 52 interchange near Trading Post. Special guests include Kansas Painted Byways artist Stan Herd and reenactors from Fort Scott National Historic Site. In conjunction with the Kansas Department of Transportation, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the U.S. Highway 69 Association and the Kansas Contractors Association, the opening highlights the Frontier Military Scenic Byway, as well as the Marais des Cygnes National Wildlife Refuge. The project has added a modern rest area with historical and wetlands displays, a walking trail, restroom facilities and a well-lit parking lot. The open house also celebrates part of the completion phase of the U.S. 69 improvements from Louisburg to Fort Scott funded under the 1999-2009 Comprehensive Transportation Program. The first safety rest area opened in Kansas in 1934; by 1958, there were 139 rest areas or roadside parks dotting the state’s highway system, according to Kansas Preservation, a publication from the Kansas State Historical Society. KDOT currently lists 160 roadside facilities — with the Trading Post site the most recently built. Marsha King, KDOT archeologist, wrote in Kansas Preservation that “in the 1990s, two new rest areas were built on a hill on I-70 just east of Paxico.” A by-reservation celebratory luncheon, put on by Koss Construction and Ideker Inc., will begin at noon at Pleasanton High School, 1001 Ash St. For more information, contact Fort Scott Tourism at (620) 223-3566 or send an e-mail message to chambe This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
