By the end of October, anyone who has been using the cramped Mary Somerville Library in Mound City will be able to enjoy a new, expanded building. The deadline to finish the new building for Library District No. 4 of Linn County is the end of October, Library Director Lena Dick said. “Double K said they might even anticipate an earlier finish date,” she said.  She also voiced her excitement. “There will be a lot of windows to let in a lot of light,” she said. “We have totally run out of space in the current location. But in the new one, we will have more room to offer digital camera lessons, as well as computer use. Right now, we only have a couple of computers. The new building will give us room for eight public-use computers. We want to offer more classes, so this will help us do that.” Expanded room will allow more space for shelving. The recent shelf space the library built for audiobooks already has filled up. Dick also said the DVD shelf was so full, the newest discs had to be placed on a lower shelf, which makes it harder to read titles. “But this will all change in the new building,” she said. “We’ll have room for a larger children’s section and room for our book club to meet in the evening.” With the present small space, Dick said, the library had to have summer reading program events elsewhere, as well as seniors’ bingo night. “Now we can hold those functions at the new library location,” she said. She is also looking forward to the new genealogy room and noted that the library does a lot of copying, printing and faxing for the public. “With the new building, this will really help us expand our public services, which is something we are so excited about,” she said.
