Balance is something that could be a strength for the Central Heights boys’ cross country team. At least it was in its first meet of the season.
Eight Vikings placed in the top 20 as Central Heights went on to easily claim the boys’ title Thursday at the Arrow Rock Invitational in Lebo, Kan. Central Heights won with 39 points, while Burlington was second with 59.

Ethan Van Zant, a two-time state qualifier, led the way for the Vikings, placing third in a time of 18 minutes, 29 seconds. Trevor Burkdoll wasn’t too far behind, finishing fourth in 18:29.

Michael David, Thomas Conaway, Masen Robertson, Alex Kimball, Gage Holler and Nathan Patterson rounded out the top 20. David was 10th in 19:41, Conaway was 15th in 19:55, Robertson was 16th in 20:01, Kimball was 17th in 20:16, Holler was 19th in 20:35 and Patterson was 20th in 20:41.
Beau Skeet, Cody Sluder, Austin King, Cody George and Jon Carlson rounded out the pack. Skeet was 27th in 21:26, Sluder was 32nd in 22:16, King was 45th in 23:59, George was 51st in 31:13 and Carlson was 55th in 31:18.

The Viking girls weren’t quite as spread out as the boys. All eight girls finished only 10 places within each other.

Alicia Croci led the way, finishing 24th in 17:19. Natasja Carlson, Joy Savage, KayeLee Olinghouse and Christian Mayhew weren’t too far off Croci’s pace. Carlson was 25th in 17:32. Savage and Olinghouse ran stride for stride to the finish line. Savage was 26th in 18:01, while Olinghouse was 27th in 18:02. Mayhew placed 28th in 18:20.
Dallas King (19:06), Renee Gragg (19:23) and Maylee Bryant (21:27) finished 31st, 32nd and 34th, respectively.

Central Heights was fourth in the girls’ team standings with 85 points. Burlington, Lyndon and West Franklin made for a three-team battle. Burlington won with 32 points. Lyndon was second with 37, while West Franklin was third with 39.

“For the first meet, our kids all did well,” Central Heights coach John Schultze said. “All newcomers showed that they are willing to run where they will compete with most runners. Ethan Van Zant’s time was a great deal faster than last year. Our overall team average was much faster than last season.”

Emily Holloman placed eighth in the girls’ junior high race in 6:57. Jessie Porter finished 19th in 7:25. Dillon Welch paced the Vikings boys, finishing ninth in 6:40. Shelby Cardell was 22nd in 7:37 and Jordan Miller was 24th in 7:39.

Central Heights returns to action at 4 p.m. Thursday at Santa Fe Trail in Carbondale, Kan.
