FORT SCOTT — Meriel Long didn’t have too much competition Thursday. Only 13 runners suited up for the girls’ varsity 4-kilometer race in the Fort Scott Cross Country Invitational. Long and Labette County’s Kandi Voorhees made it a two-person race, but Voorhees went on to victory in a time of 17 minutes, 15.37 seconds. Still, Long wasn’t too far behind, placing second in 17:46.78, crossing the finish line one-and-a-half minutes faster than the next competitor. “Meriel ran well considering we are in the middle of our toughest training phase,” Jayhawk-Linn coach Shawn Thomas said. “She ran with the Labette girl for about half of the race.” It was Long’s second-straight top-three finish to open the season. After barely missing cracking into the top 10 the previous week, junior Mason Craig did so Thursday. He placed seventh in 19:19.04, but he had some work to do in order to get into the top 10. Unlike the girls, he had to deal with a larger field as 44 runners suited up for the boys’ varsity 5-kilometer run. “Mason ran great,” Thomas said. “He was very aggressive in the middle of the race and moved up from the high teens to seventh all in the second half of the race.” Freshman Lane Harris placed third in the boys’ 4-kilometer junior varsity run in 16:08.85. Tony Rockers was 22nd in 18:00.53, while Dylan Stanley was 35th in 19:32.12. “I am happy with the progression of the freshmen,” Thomas said. “They are going to take a while to figure out race strategy and what they are truly capable of doing. We will see how far we have come once October gets here and we start to rest more, and focus on our races.”
