Matt Fields dropped back, took a couple of steps to his right before lofting a pass over the heads of the Tonganoxie defense, connecting with Matt Lofing, who had already got past the Chieftains cornerbacks. Lofing did the rest, bursting down the right sideline for a 48-yard touchdown. Although it was the only offensive touchdown for either the Osawatomie High School junior varsity or C-team football teams Monday afternoon, as the C-team lost 14-6 and the junior varsity squad 26-6, the pass play injected some life into the crowd inside Lynn Dickey Field. “Nice pass, Matt,” one fan yelled following the play with just over one minute remaining in the c-team game. Moments prior to Osawatomie’s touchdown, Dozier had a clear lane down the right sideline, but couldn’t quite corral the fumble in time. Still, Osawatomie set up shop and found the end zone shortly after. Tonganoxie took a 14-0 lead on a 26-yard touchdown run by Brady Waldier only a minute prior. Osawatomie did have good stops on defense. Devon Dozier and Zachary Higgins combined on a sack on a two-point conversion following Tonganoxie’s first touchdown. Tyler Guthrie and Curtis Williams combined a sack a few minutes later. Only one 12-minute quarter was played in the C-team game. Following an Osawatomie fumble midway through the game, Dylan Stewart recovered a fumble at the Tonganoxie 41-yard line on the next play. JV FOOTBALL Osawatomie had seven possessions start within Tonganoxie territory, but the Chieftain defense proved to be a brick wall, especially in the first half. When Osawatomie attempted a running play, a host of Tonganoxie defenders were there to meet them. Osawatomie was limited to 66 yards of total offense with one-third of that output coming on the final two plays of the game. While Osawatomie had trouble moving the ball, its defense proved to be its best offense. Trever Stroud nearly got his hands on a fumble on the Chieftains’ first play from scrimmage. Two plays later, he and Devon Smithhisler found their way into the backfield for a sack and a 13-yard loss, forcing Tonganoxie to punt. Tonganoxie was driving down the field early in the second quarter, but Dustin Doherty recovered a fumble on the Osawatomie 9-yard line. Tonganoxie stymied Osawatomie on its ensuing drive as it wrapped up Stroud in the end zone for a safety. The Chieftains went on to build a 14-0 lead following a 5-yard touchdown run and an 11-yard pass play on consecutive drives. Derrick Kueser broke in and intercepted a pass on the two-point conversion following Tonganoxie’s second score. He had a big game, breaking in from his linebacker to make several tackles. Osawatomie was rewarded for its strong play on defense as Doherty intercepted a pass and returned it 69 yards for a touchdown. Even with all the struggles Osawatomie had on offense, the Trojans only found themselves down 14-6 at halftime, but they weren’t able to get any closer. Chris Gilpatrick recovered a fumble early in the third quarter, but Osawatomie wasn’t able to do anything with it. Tonganoxie added two touchdowns in the fourth quarter to put the game away.
