LINN VALLEY — While planning a minor modification and repair of Linn Valley City Hall due to water damage, officials recently were surprised to learn that the building’s floor and walls had been weakened by water and mold. Dick George, Linn Valley mayor, reported that a mold specialist, RC Certified Inspections of Olathe, had been contacted to do a test. At the first visit, city officials waited at the building with the doors open only to find out that the specialist could not do the testing because they had opened up the building. But the specialist did show them the existing serious condition and recommended that the cause of the water damage be immediately stopped. Council members discussed options for repairing the building during the council meeting Monday. It was decided that the first step would be to have the mold testing done so they would know whether it was non-toxic or toxic mold. If it turns out to be the toxic mold, all furniture and equipment moved out of the building would have to be cleaned. The council approved a motion to pay $350 to the mold specialist for the testing. The mold specialist who is nationally certified for mold cleanup gave the city a bid of just over $4,000 to remove all evidence of mold. Prior to this, the city had requested bids on repairing the wall. The council decided these repair bids were moot now and the bidders would be informed of the new situation. The council decided to wait until the testing was done to determine what the next step would be. In the meantime, city hall will be located in its former offices owned by the Property Owners Association (POA). Residents wanting to contact city hall can continue to use the same telephone number. The council is seeking volunteers to help move the furniture out of city hall to the new location on Monday or Tuesday. For more specific times, please contact city hall at 913-757-2926. In other business, the council: Moved to accept Ordinance 124 to change the city council meeting time to the second Monday of the month at 6 p.m. Learned that the Linn Valley Fire Department had collected $1,700 for the Muscular Dystrophy Association “Fill the Boot” drive over Labor Day. Heard Jeanne Dwyer, council member, report on the possibility of obtaining a defibrillator from the Sudden Cardiac Arrest Survivors Network. The council also discussed the Mayor’s Christmas Tree Fund, which has a balance of $124. Ann Keffer, council member, asked the council and the audience for suggestions, cooperation and donations. Because the La Cygne School does an Angel Tree Fund, Keffer was asking for suggestions so gifts would not be duplicated but so everyone could be served. Keffer reminded the council that the fund was not just for children but had been used in the past for elderly, disabled or unemployed residents to help with water and sewer bills.
