MOUND CITY — The Linn County Sheriff’s Department has received a grant for one full-time officer for a year.

Sheriff Barry Walker told the Linn County Commission on Monday that the office had received $50,000 for the position.

He said the department applied for a total of $170,000 for three full-time officers. He added that he plans to make part-time Deputy Tyrone Davis’ post a full-time position.

Since the grant covers schooling for the new officer and Davis has been to training, Walker said he would check to see if he can use the school funding on the new part-time officer he is planning to hire in January.
Davis also will be the grants administrator and will help with writing new grant proposals. When funding runs out, Walker said, Davis will become the DARE officer.

Walker also reported that the three Linn County school districts — Prairie View USD 362, Pleasanton USD 344 and Jayhawk USD 346 — have requested that he bring a drug dog to schools periodically.

The sheriff said it had not been done in the past, but a recent trip to Prairie View at the request of the superintendent uncovered a bag with residue in a student’s locker.

“Any students that are found to have drugs in their lockers will be removed from the school and charged,” Walker said.

The sheriff also spoke with commissioners about plans to purchase a Kansas State Highway Patrol administrator’s car, as well as updating other equipment.
