Harry George Volland Jr., 88, formerly of Paola, died Sept, 17, 2009, in Gillette, Wyo.

He was born Feb. 15, 1921, in Kansas City, Mo., to Harry George and Leafy Travene Brown Volland.

He grew up in Raytown, Mo., where he attended school. After graduation, he enlisted on Feb. 4, 1939, in the U.S. Army in the First Battalion, 17th Infantry, Company B.

He was sent to Fort Crook, Neb., and in the early part of 1941, he was transferred to Calif., and for 18 months served as an MP for the prison. He was then transferred to the Air Corps and sent to Will Rogers Field, Okla. He then signed up and was put in the 44th Bomb Group, 67th Bomb Squadron of the 8th Air Force. He was in the European Theater of Operation during World War II. He was a flight engineer and gunner on a B-24, and a truck mechanic in the motor pool. He received his honorable discharge on Sept. 12, 1945, at Fort McArthur, Calif.

He met Nedra Dennerline Emmart in 1975, and they were married later that same year.
He enjoyed listening to music, singing in the Amazing Grace Chorus, reading, collecting eagles, antiques and camping with family. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Eagles, VFW and the American Legion. Preceding him in death were three wives, Ida, Doris and Nedra.

Survivors include two sons, Harry Louis Volland and Thomas Volland; four daughters, Veronica Corlew, Loretta Caine, Rebecca Ralston and Deborah Volland Early; and a number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held for Harry and Nedra, who died May 22, 2009, at 11 a.m. Saturday with visitation at 10 a.m. at the Evergreen Events Building, 5 W. Wea St., Paola. Burial will take place in the Paola Cemetery.
