1920-2009 Betty Ilene Atwood, 89, rural Osawatomie, died Oct. 11, 2009, at the Life Care Center in Osawatomie. She was born in Muskogee, Okla., on Jan. 20, 1920, to John and Pearl Hart Jenison. She was the younger of their two children. She grew up in Muskogee and graduated from high school in Muskogee in 1938. She was united in marriage to Calvin “Lee” Atwood on June 2, 1940, in Osawatomie. They made their home for a short time in Ottawa and then moved to Osawatomie. They became the parents of four children. Her husband preceded her in death on July 20, 1986. She had life-long ties to Osawatomie and Miami County. Her family was one of the first families to homestead in Kansas in the 1850s. She lived out her life on the property homestead which was one of the first homes built in the area at that time. She was a well-known artist with many of her paintings scattered throughout the country. She was a lifetime member of the VFW Auxiliary, member of the Eagles Auxiliary and member of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She was a former member of the Plum Creek United Methodist Church and was currently a member of the Osawatomie United Presbyterian Church. She worked at the Osawatomie State Hospital for approximately 10 years teaching art and crafts in the alcoholic ward. During World War II, she worked in De Soto at the munitions plant making bombs for the war effort while her husband served in the Pacific theater. She was a wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was preceded in death by her husband and her sister. She is survived by her children, Brenda Olson of Rantoul, Janice Prothe and John Atwood, both of Osawatomie, and Mark Atwood of Farmington, Utah; nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Eddy-Birchard Funeral Home, 203 Main St., Osawatomie, KS 66064, (913) 755-2114. Visitation will be from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday. Burial will be in the Osawatomie Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.
