When the Prairie View, Jayhawk-Linn and Pleasanton football teams tackle district play in the 2010-11 seasons, plenty of new faces will greet them on the opposing side of the ball.

The Kansas State High School Activities Association released district assignments on Oct. 7, which the KSHSAA produces on a bi-annual basis because of the two-year rotation in scheduling. Prairie View, Jayhawk-Linn and Pleasanton High School athletic directors, as well as hundreds of others across the state, learned their new district and non-league opponents in a meeting in Salina.

Prairie View will play Iola, Anderson County and Fort Scott in District 6-4A, replacing Osawatomie, Paola and Louisburg. Based on the movement of teams into and out of Class 4A, as well as the location of all the teams, Prairie View athletic director Darin Gagnebin said he believed that was the way the Buffalos’ would’ve shaped up before the KSHSAA released the district assignments. He was correct.
“We are excited to play these teams that we have not seen on a regular basis for several years,” Gagnebin said. “Fort Scott and Iola are very competitive schools, just as Louisburg and Paola. I do not believe our new district will be any easier for us. Our coaches will still have to prepare in the same manner, if not more, especially since we have not played Fort Scott and Iola for a number of years and are not as familiar with them as we are with Louisburg and Paola. We are excited about the new challenge.”
Ottawa, which recently snapped a 33-game losing streak and is making the move down from 5A to 4A, and Fredonia will replace Tonganoxie and Towanda-Circle as non-league opponents.

“Both schools will challenge our program,” Gagnebin said. “Fredonia is in the top of their league and Ottawa will be a physically competitive team that is continuing to improve.”

Like Ottawa, Jayhawk-Linn and Pleasanton are moving down a classification — Jayhawk-Linn from 3A to 2-1A and Pleasanton from 2-1A to 8-man Division I football.

Jayhawk-Linn, along with Olpe, Pittsburg-St. Mary’s Colgan, Lyndon, Humboldt and Oswego will comprise District 1-2-1A. Because of the five-game schedule for district play in 2-1A, Jayhawk-Linn will play every Pioneer League foe except for Osawatomie.

“Our district turned out the way I expected,” Jayhawk-Linn athletic director Jay Applegate said. “It’s a very tough district with both Olpe and Colgan, two very strong and consistently good (teams).”

Pleasanton, Chetopa, Colony-Crest, Moran-Marmaton Valley, St. Paul and Yates Center will comprise District 2 , while Cedar Vale/Dexter, Madison, Melvern-Marais des Cygnes Valley and Miami (Mo.) will make up the non-district portion of the Blu-Jays’ schedule.
