BONNER SPRINGS — One couldn’t help but get excited about the future of the Prairie View cross country program.

While Saturday’s performances at the Class 4A regional meet at Wyandotte County Park could offer a glimpse into what should be a bright future for the Buffalos, the present saw heartbreak.

Senior Adam Dokos and sophomore Jace Roy were at the opposite ends of their cross country careers. Dokos was competing in his final regional meet, while Roy was making his debut. Dokos, who was the top finisher for the Buffalo boys in all but one race this season, including seventh in the Pioneer League meet in which he earned first-team honors, put it all on the line Saturday, placing 19th in a time of 18 minutes, 6.54 seconds.

Roy, meanwhile, made a big splash in his first season running cross country, winning two junior varsity races, while placing in the top-10 in two varsity races, including honorable mention for his ninth-place finish at the Pioneer League meet two weeks ago in Garnett. He put forth another solid performance in Bonner Springs, placing 22nd out of 74 runners in 18:17.44 in a race that featured the likes of state-ranked Paola, Baldwin and De Soto.
Baldwin and De Soto set a fast pace, as both schools accounted for the top-six finishers in the boys’ race. Dokos and Roy, however, showed that Prairie View has a strong contingent of its own. They ran nearly side by side during portions of the race, but in the end, both ended up missing the cut for the state meet by a couple of spots — Dokos by only one spot and Roy by three spots.

Seth Diehm, a senior, ran to 45th place in 19:12.62 in his final career race, while freshman Sean Noel was 68th in 21:31.11. Eric Noel, a senior, didn’t compete.

On the girls’ side, Melanie Sommer, a sophomore, and Casey Thayer, a junior, looked to extend what has already been a strong first season for the two Buffalos. After earning first-team Pioneer League honors, both came in looking for a state berth. While they both fell shy of state, they showed why next year could be just as, if not more exciting. Sommer placed 40th in 18:35.14, while Thayer didn’t finish the race due to leg cramps.

St. James Academy, Baldwin and De Soto set the pace for the girls’ race, as all three schools accounted for the top-10 individual performances. Baldwin won the girls’ team title, while De Soto was second and St. James third. All three schools automatically qualified their entire teams for state since they were the top-three finishing teams.

Prairie View didn’t have enough runners to account for the team score in either the boys’ or girls’ race.
