MOUND CITY — When did the Linn County landfill open? That was the question Joe Maloney, solid waste coordinator, posed to the Linn County commissioners on Monday. Maloney told the commissioners that there was a new mandate from the state that required landfills to report on past waste dumped so that an estimate could be made of the greenhouse gases that may still be coming off the landfills. “If 2.5 million cubic meters or more of trash has been dumped in the landfill since its beginning, the landfill would have to undergo testing to see how much methane gas is coming from the landfill,” Maloney said. Maloney said consultants from Aquaterra Environment Solutions Inc. said if the records could be found, they would work the formula. If it came up less than the 2.5 million cubic meters, the company would complete the reporting documents and put the information in an operation record that would be kept on file by the county. Commissioners asked Maloney to have Aquaterra give them a proposal for the cost. Commissioners and members of the public discussed the possible dates of the landfill opening. Mary Grosshart, Pleasanton, said when she was on a committee for the opening of the CD landfill, there was a file with information about the original opening date. County Clerk David Lamb will see what he can locate and also when the land was purchased. In a separate matter, Maloney said that he had checked with Deffenbaugh about taking Linn County’s paper for recycling. According to Maloney, an official at Deffenbaugh said they would be willing to take Linn County’s paper if they could take all of the recyclables. Maloney said the paper would have to be baled, but the plastic would not have to be sorted. Maloney said Deffenbaugh would set up a semi-trailer for collecting the recyclables. “It would get rid of our storage problem, and they will pay us something for the bales,” said Maloney. Commissioner Vicki Leonard asked Maloney to put together a price comparison for commissioners to review.
