BURLINGTON — It probably wasn’t the way Central Heights envisioned winning a district title, but winning it is all that matters. Despite falling to Burlington 15-8 in double overtime Thursday evening in what could only be described as a Mud Bowl, the Vikings accomplished what they set out to do: earn the right to play host to a Kansas Class 3A bidistrict playoff game. Central Heights, Burlington and Jayhawk-Linn all finished 2-1 in district play. But with Central Heights (plus-19) owning the best point differential in district play among the three teams, the Vikings won the district title and played Osage City (6-3) at home in a first-round playoff game Tuesday. Jayhawk-Linn (2-7 overall) snuck into the playoffs by virtue of its win over Burlington three weeks ago and traveled to Silver Lake on Tuesday to battle the second-ranked Eagles. (See Friday’s edition of the Miami County Republic Weekend for a recap of both games.) Central Heights (4-5 overall) was hit hard by turnovers in sloppy field conditions. Both possessions in overtime ended with an interception and fumble. After a scoreless first half, Central Heights got on the board first on a 5-yard run by Dalton Schwab for an 8-0 Viking lead after a successful two-point conversion. Burlington scored its only touchdown in regulation on a fumble recovery for a touchdown with 5:16 remaining in the fourth quarter. Burlington had an opportunity to win the game in the final minute, but a 25-yard field goal attempt was off the mark. After neither team scored in the first overtime, Burlington scored on a 2-yard touchdown pass in the second overtime. Central Heights looked to send the game into a third overtime, but a fumble recovery by Burlington ended the game.
