Osawatomie USD 367 will put on a Safety Summit on Thursday at Osawatomie High School. During the event, district staff members, teachers and administrators will meet and greet area emergency officials and officers to create a connection and to better inform district employees of who they need to contact in an emergency situation.

When he detailed the proposed summit during the past few school board meetings, Superintendent Gary French put it best when he noted that each weekday, USD 367 has a third of Osawatomie’s population within its buildings. Also, he said, the first time district employees and emergency officials meet should not be during an emergency situation.
French best illustrated the need for improved communication several weeks ago, after schools in Fontana had been put on full lockdown after several shots were fired at police officers in a field southeast of Osawatomie. The event occurred around the time school was dismissed in Osawatomie, and French said USD 367 has at least one or two buses that drive near the area where the shots were fired.
Luckily, no one was injured in the shooting, and all students made it to their destinations safe and sound, but French pointed out that the district should have been notified of the situation in order to better protect its students.

French and other USD 367 teachers, administrators and staff members who made the summit possible should be applauded and commended. Their foresight and planning initiatives are a sign of strong leadership, and can only benefit the students of USD 367.
