Osawatomie residents will get the opportunity to show their generous side this weekend. Boy Scout Troop 106 will be placing plastic bags on the doorknobs of nearly every residence in town in the hopes of collecting canned food for the First Presbyterian Church pantry. The Scouts will be making their rounds Saturday morning at 9. Donors have a week to go shopping or sift through their cupboards to find non-perishable canned goods for the pantry. The boys will make their pick-up visit next Saturday, Nov. 14, beginning at 8 a.m. The effort usually gathers between 1,500 and 2,000 pounds of food, said Galen Critchfield, liaison for First Presbyterian Church and Troop 106. “The citizens of Osawatomie are pretty generous when it comes to that,” he said. “You’ve got to give them credit for that.” Critchfield said the weak economy makes the Scouts’ efforts even more important this year as the holidays approach. “A lot of people are out of work or have jobs, but are not making as much as they’re used to,” he said. “It’s that time of year with Thanksgiving and Christmas — there’s more demand on the food pantry during this time of year.” The experience gives the boys community service credit, which is required to gain rank, but Critchfield said for them it’s also just plain fun. “The kids have a ball,” he said. “It’s just a big fun time we have together.” If you miss the pick-up on Nov. 14, call Critchfield at (913) 731-0078.
