Halloween is the time of year for kids to roam the streets, dressed in all manner of outfits and costumes. However, not all children find themselves fortunate enough to don a mask in order to  become a caped crusader or a stunning princess for the evening. That is something the Osawatomie Elks Lodge aimed to do something about.

Michael Peace of the lodge helped coordinate an effort to donate boxes upon boxes of assorted outfits, make-up, decorations and other costume-creating materials to Osawatomie USD 367. Some of those materials made their way to Swenson Early Childhood Education Center on Friday morning to help ensure that every student who needed and wanted a costume received one.

“It was pretty simple to do, and I’m tickled to death it worked out,” said Peace, who was humble about the organization’s donation. “That’s just what we’re supposed to do.”
The donation blended well with the Halloween safety lessons and tips given to Swenson students by Principal Andrea Manes. Among the points she hit on was that trick-or-treaters should be thankful for what they receive. Manes said the donations helped provide costumes for 10 to 15 kids, all of whom were delighted. The students were not only allowed to wear costumes during festivities at Swenson that day, but also were given the costumes to take home and wear as they went trick-or-treating Saturday.

“The kids just were excited,” Manes said. “Just to make sure those kids had costumes, it just brightened their day to make sure they were included.”

She said the donation provided a slew of options, ranging from princess and pop-star costumes to ninjas and pirates. The number of costumes allowed for administrators to let students who needed an outfit to pick out what they wanted.

“Anything that wasn’t used this year, we will store and bring out that supply next year,” Manes said.

Peace said the organization had been sitting on 15 to 20 boxes of materials, and he couldn’t think of a better way to donate them.
