Road construction crews started applying a new surface to Eighth Street between Main Street and the Creamery Bridge after beginning work on the road last Friday. Supervised through a partnership between the Kansas Department of Transportation and the city of Osawatomie, road crews from Ottawa-based Killough Construction began a mill-and-overlay process in which the top two inches of the street were removed and will be replaced with asphalt. Brian Schafer, KDOT area engineer, said in an e-mail that the new road will feature a smoother surface with clearer markings and will improve the flow of traffic through the area. According to City Manager Bret Glendening, work had been scheduled to start Thursday, but was pushed back because of rain. Schafer said the work shouldn’t last more than a few days, but drivers will need to find an alternate route until construction is completed.
