LA CYGNE — Is beauty within stronger than physical appearance? Will a beautiful young girl be able to get past the hideous looks of the beastly prince and shatter the spell that has kept him and his household staff prisoners inside the walls of his castle?

The cast of “Beauty and the Beast” will answer those questions when the musical is performed at the Prairie View Performance Center on Friday and Saturday. The curtain for each performance goes up at 7 p.m. at the facility, which connects the Prairie View high school and middle school east of La Cygne on Kansas Highway 152.

Although the musical is an adaptation of the Disney animated version that first premiered in 1991, the story is a folk tale first written down in the mid-1700s.

The two lead roles went to two transfer students who are new to the school this year, said Genell Arnold, one of three faculty sponsors of the play. Senior Jason Strong is cast in the role of the Beast and prince, and junior Mandi Christenson plays Belle, the youngest daughter of Maurice (senior John Anson), who is held captive by the Beast.
Belle offers herself as hostage in exchange for the freedom of her father, and her stay at the castle creates conflict in the Beast, whose rage at his fate is now tempered with love for the young woman.

Meanwhile, a young man in the village, Gaston (senior Kyle Dilley) has designs to win the hand of Belle, and the plotting of Gaston and henchman Lefou (Jacoby Elliott) complicate the plot.

Because the musical requires many elaborate costumes and sets, the cost of the producing it could have been fairly steep.

However, Arnold said, the school was able to rent many of items from the high school in Baxter Springs, Kan., which recently produced the musical. She said the director at that school estimated the cost for the costumes and props at about $1,200.
