MOUND CITY — Preparation for the 2009 holiday season has begun for the Linn County Courthouse. County Appraiser Steve Thompson told the Linn County Commission last week that the current Christmas lights on the courthouse lose about a third of their bulbs every year and have to be replaced. At the Nov. 9 meeting, Thompson suggested that the county purchase more efficient LED lights that are cold running and have a 50,000-hour life expectancy. Thompson’s proposal was for lights and hangers for the front of the courthouse at a cost of about $350. He also recommended a timer to save money and proposed that Mid-States Restoration put up the lights since the contractor already has a lift in place for work on the courthouse. The commissioners agreed and authorized Thompson to order the new lighting. In other business, the commissioners last week: Approved rescheduling this week’s regular meeting to 9 a.m. today. Approved hiring Tanner Ogden as a firefighter for Station 920, pending drug-test results, paperwork and a probationary period. Heard from Emergency Preparedness Coordinator Doug Barlet that there was to be a meeting in Frontenac on Nov. 10 about the floodplain management and maps. Discussed with Road District No. 2 foreman John Black the hiring of a temporary mechanic position. Commissioners learned that full-time permanent mechanic pay ranges from $11.72 to $15.10 per hour. Commissioners recommended that the temporary mechanic wages be based on experience. Approved a lot split presented by Zoning Administrator Larry Robinson for William Wolfinger on County Road 1095 and accepted the accompanying grant of road easement as requested. Reviewed the year-to-date Linn County Park Report for October 2009. Approved allowing Chairman Herb Pemberton to sign an agreement with Boone Brothers Roofing for work at the Blue Mound and Centerville fire stations. Approved Pemberton to sign an agreement with Purinton Pest Control for termite treatment for the Road District No. 1 Shop and the Concern Building. Adopted a resolution confirming the establishment of the regional economic development organization. Adopted a resolution confirming support for the qualifying regional strategic plan. Heard during the public comment period from Roberta Childers, who said she thinks the county should blacktop 1850 Road east of County Road 1095 to the water tower. Reappointed Virginia McGee to the Tri-Ko Inc. Board of Directors.
