Head Start Program Awarded $44,700 Grant

The playground at Swenson Early Childhood Education Center will receive a bit of a face-lift, courtesy of Head Start.

With a $44,700 grant, the program will contract to build a retaining wall to improve drainage in the area, construct a shade structure to provide relief from the heat and add rubber mulch around playground equipment. It’s an initiative that Swenson Principal Andrea Manes happily informed the USD 367 Board of Education of last Thursday.

Clara Cox, area Head Start director, said that the Swenson project is a part of a much larger grant benefiting multiple Head Start programs in the region and that it showcases the partnership between Head Start and Osawatomie USD 367.

“It’s kind of a win-win situation,” Cox said. “It’s not just going to benefit our 20 kids; it’s going to benefit every child in that building.”

Swenson is home to Head Start, multiple preschool programs and Osawatomie kindergarten classes.
Cox noted that the playground at Swenson has deteriorated in the last few years, and this will provide a boost to equipment. The improvement project has been in the works since the grant application was submitted in July, and Cox said officials look to complete the work before Thanksgiving. Cox said most everything is ready to go, and the project is just waiting on building permits before moving forward.

“All the supplies are here; it’s just a matter of waiting for everyone to get their ducks in a row,” she said.

Cox added that this is a type of renovation project the district has wanted to do for quite a while, but it simply hasn’t had the funding to take action on it.

“The dollars just haven’t been there for them,” she said. “It’s just been really nice that we’ve been able to help them out and do this.”
