A group of Osawatomie High School students learned how to exercise leadership skills and was rewarded for its accomplishments after attending the Kansas Association for Youth regional conference.

In total, seven members of the OHS KAY chapter attended the Nov. 6 event at Northeast High School in Arma, Kan. The program — which emphasizes service in one’s school, community, nation and world — is designed to foster leadership in young people. The annual regional conference allows students to gather and exchange ways in which they can better lead and serve.

“The kids we took this year were very excited, because they got a lot of ideas for things they could do from other schools,” said Patty Trull, group sponsor and OHS art teacher. Of course, getting a day off from school is a plus, too, she added with a smile.

Group members who attended the conference included Megan Alonzo, Devon Stewart, Mike McDaniel, Jonathan Klingenburg, Angel Woodard, Joe VanVlack and Kathryn Wilson.
The ideas the OHS students garnered from the event ranged from innovative canned-food drives to frozen-turkey bowling fund-raisers and nearly everything in between.
Klingenburg and Wilson led officers in a network discussion, in which they debated the necessary skills and abilities required to hold the position of a club treasurer and finance director secretary.

In addition to participating in the exchange of ideas among groups, OHS KAY members were recognized for their community-service efforts during the last year, which included more than 30 different volunteer tasks. The organization was given the Blue Award, the second-highest level of recognition that can be awarded to a KAY chapter and an honor based on a point system for community leadership and service efforts.
