1929-2009 William Joseph “Bill” Plummer, 80, Osawatomie, died Nov. 21, 2009, at Kansas City Hospice House, Kansas City, Mo. Bill was born March 6, 1929, in Paola. He was the third of five children born to Walter Biddle Plummer and Margaret Elizabeth Keenan Plummer. As children, they lived on Wea Creek on the southeast corner of the current Lake Miola. He attended Paola schools, including St. Patrick’s Grade School, graduating from Paola High School with the class of 1947. His first job was delivering groceries for the Logan-Fowler Wholesale Grocery in Paola. He worked for the Paola Lumber Yard from 1948 to 1951; Fluor Corporation (now Taylor-Forge) in Paola from 1951 to 1953; and Haren-Laughlin Construction Co. in Kansas City from 1953 to 1960. During this time, 1948 to 1959, he was proud to have served in the Army National Guard, Battery C, 127th Field Artillery based in Paola, where he finished as a Tech. Sgt. working as surveyor and gun placement for the 155MM Howitzer unit. In 1960, he started his own business in Osawatomie — Mico Plumbing, Heating & Electric — operating for over 30 years and even continuing to complete small jobs in retirement in the late 1990s. He was united in marriage to Barbara Jean Cuthbertson on Jan. 24, 1951. They became the parents of five children and made their home in Spring Hill until moving to Osawatomie in 1963. He was actively involved in his church and community. As a member of St. Philip Neri Church, and a third degree member of Knights of Columbus, he was a regular lector, called bingo and was involved on several committees and the construction of the new church. His community service included serving as mayor of Spring Hill in the early 1960s, where duties included chief of police, fire chief and dog catcher. He was actively involved in the Osawatomie Chamber of Commerce and the Lions Club; served on the board and as president of the Osawatomie School Board and was chairman of the John Brown Jamboree Parade for 25 years. He loved to fish, hunt, play golf and grow sweet corn and vegetables for the community. At one point in time, he was the community’s resident mushroom expert, and enjoyed studying and identifying new mushrooms for him and friends to eat. He sang silly songs for his kids and grandkids, and invented gadgets to make life easier. Most of all, he enjoyed visiting, reminiscing and telling stories with friends and family. By today’s standards, he was an original version of being “green,” as he never threw away anything he might use, and found a way to recycle as a new gadget or part. He was preceded in death by his siblings, James Plummer, Edward Plummer, Mary Beth Plummer Ricci and Angela Plummer. He is survived by his wife, Barbara of 58 years; two daughters, Sandra Ann Montgomery of Girard, Kan., and Nancy Elaine Holloway of Mission.; three sons, Richard Lee Plummer of Sioux Falls, S.D., Steven Joseph Plummer of Corona, Calif., and Robert William Plummer of Cheyenne, Wyo.; 12 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Arrangements are being handled by Eddy-Birchard Funeral Home, 203 Main St., Osawatomie, KS 66064, (913) 755-2114. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. today at St. Philip Neri Catholic Church, 500 Parker Ave., Osawatomie. Pallbearers are Sean Holloway, Chris Leritz, Daniel Plummer, Ian Plummer, Matthew Plummer and Brad Waggoner. Honorary pallbearers are Basil Ricci, Daryl Rohrer, Jim Gilchrist, Jim Newton, Jimmy Cole, John Slayman, George Pretz Sr., Ron Kelly and Ernest “Swede” Swenson. Memorials are to Boys’ Town USA and Salvation Army.
