Marie Barbara Austin, 82, Ottawa, died Nov. 18, 2009, at her home with her family in attendance.

She was born Jan. 1, 1927, at Sparrows Point, Baltimore, Md. She was one of nine children of Albert Britton and Josephine Margaret Louden Ammons. She graduated from Sparrows Point High School in 1944.

First Lieutenant Marie Barbara Ammons was united in marriage to First Lieutenant Franklin Houston Austin Jr. on Oct. 19, 1957, at Vance Air Force Base, Enid, Okla. They made their first home in Enid. With Frank in the Air Force, they were transferred to many Air Force Bases across the United States. From Vance Air Force Base they moved to Randolph Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas; then Malmstrom Air Force Base, Great Falls, Mont.; Bergstrom Air Force Base, Austin, Texas; Ellsworth Air Force Base, Rapid City, S.D.; Shaw Air Force Base, Sumter, S.C.; and then Cannon Air Force Base, Clovis, N.M.

Marie and the children lived in Osawatomie for a year while Frank was serving in Vietnam. In 1975, after retiring from the Air Force, they moved to Ottawa and have lived there since that time.

She earned her nurses degree while working at Church Home Hospital, Baltimore. She completed her residency at Johns Hopkins Hospital and then was an operating room nurse for six years at a V.A. Hospital in Baltimore.
After serving two years in the United States Air Force, she raised her family; then continued her nursing career at Ransom Hospital in Ottawa and Lawrence Memorial Hospital in Lawrence, Kan. She retired in 1989 and devoted her last seven years to enjoyment in her mountain chalet in Pitkin, Colo.

She was preceded in death by two sisters, Dorothy Alberta Ammons Baker and Bernice Louise Ammons Lewis; four brothers, Frederick Carl Ammons, Charles Robert Ammons, Lawrence Alan Ammons, and Albert Louden Ammons.

She is survived by her husband Frank of the home; one son Franklin H. Austin IV of Albuquerque; three daughters Sallie Marie Austin-Swanson of Quinlan, Texas, Susan Lee Austin-Michael of Lawrence, and Barbara Renee’ Austin-Garrison of De Soto; two sisters Carolyn Ammons-Cahill of San Antonio and Shirley Ammons-Valley of Los Angeles, Calif.; four grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

Arrangements are by the Eddy-Birchard Funeral Home, 203 Main St., Osawatomie, KS 66064, (913) 755-2114. Burial will be in the Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Va., with military honors.

Memorials may be made to the United Service Organization (U.S.O.) during this time of military armed conflict.
