MOUND CITY — At a special Linn County Commission meeting Nov. 18, officials discussed what they took away from sessions at the recent Kansas Association of Counties conference in Overland Park. After listening to the concerns of other counties, Commissioner Mike Page said it seems that Linn County has completed many projects that are timely. Commissioner Vicki Leonard said the idea of consolidating counties is apparently being discussed by Kansas legislators. The estimated savings from such a move, according to one conference speaker, would be about $586 million per year, she said. Leonard said commissioners were told that a bill won’t be debated this year, but the idea is being tossed around. She said she thinks Linn County is in a good financial position with the revenue from the Kansas City Power & Light generating station at La Cygne, but other counties might want to share in that. Leonard also pointed out that there would be money-saving benefits without the consolidation by counties, through sharing costs, such as the salary of a county engineer. In other business, the commissioners: Approved hiring Jeremy Willard as a temporary full-time mechanic for Road District No. 2 at a rate of $12.50 per hour. Approved providing a support letter from the county to Southeast Kansas Community Action Program (SEK-CAP) Transit District No. 10. County Clerk David Lamb told the commissioners the written support allows SEK-CAP to apply for transportation grants. Approved establishing a panel for interviewing the candidates for the deputy fire chief/assistant emergency manager position. At present, there are 10 applicants. Members to be included on the panel would be Lamb, two Linn County Fire Board members, Fire Chief Doug Barlet and a county commissioner. Heard a request from Fire Board Chairman Rob Dent to seek bids to purchase a grass unit at the end of this year and another one next year. Page told him to solicit prices. Heard from Maintenance Supervisor Jerry Bedgood that work on the courthouse is nearly completed. Bedgood also reported that bills had been received from Boone Brothers Roofing on the Centerville and Blue Mound fire station roofing projects. The total was $3,914 lower than the estimates. Heard a complaint from Bernita Robbins about deep chuckholes on Nickel Road south of 1050 Road. Leonard said she would contact John Black about the road. Heard a report from Lamb that a human resources program he looked into buying has been discounted from $4,570 to $2,285. Lamb said the clerk’s budget has enough room to purchase the program this year; the commission agreed to the purchase. Heard from Economic Development Director Dennis Arnold about the energy-efficiency project for the courthouse. Commissioners asked Arnold to ask representatives from two companies interested in the project to come to the next meeting.
