MOUND CITY – While the coming holiday season brings celebration, it also offers more opportunity for theft, according to a detective with the Linn County Sheriff’s department.

“During the holiday season, there are usually more burglaries,” Chief Detective Gary Stone told the Linn County Commission on Nov. 18.

“We would like to get the word out to the public to take pictures and record serial numbers of their property,” said Stone. He added that it is much more likely that the items will be returned if they can be identified by a picture or serial number.

Most insurance companies also require this information. Stone encourages residents to report any strange vehicles to the sheriff’s department.

In a related matter, Stone said the sheriff’s office is still looking into other avenues for evidence storage and additional offices because the La Cygne Medical Building needs a lot of repairs. Earlier in the month, Sheriff Barry Walker suggested the county use the former medical center as a satellite office.
According to Stone, when Sheriff Walker looked at the building he found roof leaks, fresh water damage, mold on cabinets and tops of doors. Commissioner Mike Page asked Maintenance Supervisor Jerry Bedgood to see what needs to be repaired rather than let the facility deteriorate.

The detective also reported that two of the department’s vehicles have worn-out transmissions. Commissioner Vicki Leonard asked if these were the vehicles that were going to be taken out of service.

Stone said they had and one had just had the transmission replaced and Sheriff Walker was working on getting this taken care of under warranty.

Stone also informed commissioners that the sheriff’s office is working on a project to help the elderly gather personal information about medical history, physicians, next of kin, and other vital information to keep in a location in their homes. The project would be similar to the “Vial of Life” in other areas, he said.
