For Osawatomie Middle School drama teacher Lori French, picking the right fall play production isn’t as simple as just pulling a script off the shelf.

“I read lots and lots of plays,” she said. “Usually, I can tell within the first act if that’s something I want to do or not.”

It’s a careful balance, she said, of picking the right production for a middle school setting and one that sports an expansive cast to accommodate the large number of students eager to get their first whack at stage performance.

“I pick the play to fit the kids,” French said.

This year, she found “Kokonut Island” to be just the right size.

Focusing on an island owned by the Hawkins family, the play revolves around the trials, tribulations and mishaps that befall the Caribbean resort after it is struck by a hurricane, leaving it in shambles not only physically, but financially as well. In a bid to end its monetary woes, the cast of characters establishes a phony high school that guarantees a diploma — for a fee, of course.
It’s a production for which French has high hopes, and she says it’s coming along quite well.

She wants people to go in with the right mind-set and help give students a taste of theatre.

“The whole idea of this is to give them the chance to get up in front of people,” French said.

In the end, she hopes to give students a spark to help them at the next level.

“They can get some basic training down here, and when they get to the high school, they can fine-tune their skills.”

Tickets are available at the middle school office for the Dec. 11 and 12 performances. The cost $3 per person and also can be purchased right before the event. Doors open at 6:20 p.m., and the show begins at 7 p.m.

Anyone attending would do well to purchase his or her tickets soon.

“There have been lots of years that we’ve sold out early,” French said.

Cast members include Samantha Inscore, Sheldon Booe, Cheyenne Cooper, Larissa Harrison, Chance Jolley, Bailey Jones, Emmaline Cochrane, Cailyn Carter, Jordan Page, Keonna Goodwin, Brittany Morris, Hunter Poage, Katelyn Butler, Larissa Thompson, Brandon Guilfoyle-Pace, Cristy Fereira, Doug Kueser, Cole Rayl, Daphne Lofing, Jillian Marcum, Caitlyn Wilson, Tori Cole, Morgan Soucie, Megan Higdon, Ben Dorsett, Brittany Crosby, Stone Williams, Holly Noland, Tanner Foulk, Bailey VanVlack, Keisha McDaniel, Taryn McReynolds and Brooke Richards.
