John Brown Memorial Park was briefly closed to the public Saturday afternoon after Osawatomie police officers responded to a report of a gunshot and a subject down near the shelter house.

The report was issued at 12:52 p.m. Officers discovered the body of a 34-year-old Osawatomie man, killed by an apparently self-inflicted bullet wound to the head.
Bob Butters, assistant police chief, said there were several people in the park at the time who heard the sound of the gun firing.

“It’s, unfortunately, pretty cut and dry,” he said.

The park since has been reopened.

Sgt. Jason Hudson is continuing the Osawatomie Police Department’s investigation of the death.
