Osawatomie’s annual Christmas Lighting and Opening is slated to take place Friday and Saturday. The lighting ceremony will take place from 5 to 8 p.m. tonight downtown. Osawatomie businesses will be celebrating by having special sales and activities for customers from 5 to 7 p.m. While shopping, residents can register for prize drawings at the participating locations. The drawings will take place at 7:30 p.m. at the Osawatomie History Museum and Railroad Depot. Registrants must be present to win. Attendees also will have a chance to win a jar of candy and $10 if they can guess how many candies are in the jar. A $25 prize will be awarded to whoever wins the Christmas cookie and cupcake decorating contest, sponsored by the Century 21 Pool Realty office. Participants can spread the cheer and help others get into the Christmas spirit with downtown caroling, which begins at 5:30 p.m. and will last until 7. At 6 p.m., students with the Paola School of Dance will have a holiday recital at City Auditorium, and the Band of Oz will perform at the Osawatomie History Museum at 6:30 p.m. The lighting ceremony will be at 7 p.m. The event is sponsored by the John Brown Museum State Historic Site and the Osawatomie Tourism Committee. The fun continues Saturday during Santa’s Workshop Arts and Crafts Fair at Osawatomie Middle School, 428 Pacific Ave. Featuring live music and family friendly activities, the yearly holiday event will offer an array of entertainment options. Prizes will be drawn every hour, and youths may get their picture taken with Santa Claus for only $5. Contests will bring $25 prizes for the best-decorated holiday cupcake and cookie. The event also boasts live music. The Band of Oz will perform at 10 a.m., greeting Santa as he arrives. At 11 a.m., the Osawatomie First United Methodist Church choir will perform, followed by the Osawatomie school vocal music and piano students at 11:30 and a piano performance by Osawatomie High School choir teacher Kristi Baker. Finally, the School of Dance will perform a routine at 1 p.m., during which time a free Christmas bingo event will be offered, with several prizes up for grabs.
