MOUND CITY — Sometimes it pays to be attentive to spelling. Like when a distant aunt leaves you an establishment in Nevada called the Lucky Lady Salon — not saloon. What do a couple of young actors know about styling and trimming locks? More importantly, will they be able to fend off a couple of villains who want to use their salon as a staging area to rob the bank next door? Those are the dilemmas facing the heroes and heroines of “Taming the Wild, Wild West in a Dress,” written by Billy St. John. It will be performed Thursday and Saturday evenings at 7 p.m. at Jayhawk-Linn High School in Mound City. Clarence Rawlins (played by Nick Thompson) is the nephew and actor who misreads his aunt’s handwritten will. Instead of inheriting a profitable saloon with a stage for performances, he and the rest of his band of actors find themselves running a salon. After they hear the town barber declare that no self-respecting man would cut ladies’ hair, Clarence and his sidekick Roger Gaines (Chisolm Sluder) don wigs and dresses to become British aristocrat Lady Claire Rawl and French stylist Rogaine (puns intended). But two crooks, Jessica James (Micah Black) and Colt Revolver Jr. (Dane Jaeger) have designs on the salon, because it has a common wall with the bank next door. Will they be successful, or will the actors discover the scheme in time? Will Clarence be able to win the heart of the sweet church organist Melodie Plunkett (Katie George)? And will Roger be able to charm the tone-deaf bar girl singer Carrie O’Key (Brenna Johanning)? Those questions and more will be answered this week when the curtain rises in Mound City.
