MOUND CITY — The Linn County Commission on Monday voted to sell the former La Cygne Medical Clinic building at 112 N. Broadway to Dennis Arnold, county economic development director.

Commissioners accepted Arnold’s bid of $5,100 for the old medical building.

County Counselor Gary Thompson said since no bids were received when the building was advertised for sale, the county can make a private sale.

The only written proposal was from Arnold. Another interested party was contacted and asked to turn in a written bid, but one was not received.

Commissioner Mike Page said the building is costing the county money for heating and the roof needs to be repaired. Page asked Thompson if any type of disclosure statement needs to be made to Arnold regarding the needed repairs.

Thompson said he would draft a letter to let him know.

Arnold then entered the meeting and agreed to purchase the structure as is with no warranties. He said he was aware of the repair needs.

Arnold said he plans to refurbish the building to provide a much-needed extended-stay place in La Cygne. Due to the extensive repairs required, the transformation will not happen immediately, he added.

Earlier this month, Sheriff Barry Walker indicated that he would be interested in using the former clinic as a satellite office. However, he later said water damage and mold on cabinets inside made the building too costly to refurbish for that use.
