With every swipe, charge and purchase, about 600 customers of First Option Bank have helped raise more than $20,000 for Osawatomie USD 367. During the past two years, First Option customers were given the choice to sign up for a program that collects a percentage of the transaction fees when using their First Option debit card as a credit card. The amounts slowly built up over time, creating a funding source that Osawatomie Superintendent Gary French said the district has used for programs that directly benefit students, including drug-prevention programs and scholarships. “You look at $20,000, especially in today’s times, those funds are huge,” French said. Dorothy Powell, assistant vice president of marketing for First Option, said USD 367 was one of the first districts to partner with the financial institution in the program. Other schools participating include Prairie View USD 362, Paola USD 368, Louisburg USD 416 and Spring Hill USD 230. Of the $20,000 raised so far, she said, roughly $4,000 has come in since August. “We’ve had a very good response to it,” Powell said, adding that she thinks it has made a noticeable difference in district schools. “I think it has helped them fund different programs they wouldn’t have the money to support otherwise,” she said.
