MOUND CITY — Linn County Sheriff Barry Walker told the Linn County Commission on Monday that he is attempting to get a more reliable phone system installed for prisoners at the jail.

Changing the phones will require release from the current contract implemented by the former sheriff, Walker said.

While the rate paid to the Sheriff’s Office will be lower with the new Kansas-based company, the phones should work more consistently, he said.

The sheriff also told the commission that a meeting with American Medical Response Operations Manager Ken Keller was successful. According to Walker, the Sheriff’s Office will not be charged for inmate ambulance runs or, at worst, only will be charged the Medicaid rate.

In other business, the commissioners on Monday:

Approved payment of more than $56,700 from Community Development Block Grant funds for the Prescott fire station.

Approved a bid of $5,643 for three light bars and switch boxes for the new grass fire trucks from KA-Comm Inc. of Olathe.

Voted to spend almost $1,350 to buy radios and antennas from Western Communication Service Co. of Butler, Mo.

Approved the expenditure of more than $2,400 for transfer switches at the fire stations. Tom Kemper will donate labor and incidental materials for the project.
Voted to allow County Fire Chief Doug Barlet to purchase 18 tires from Goodyear for the new trucks at a cost of $3,420. Barlet also told commissioners that the Linn County Fire Board had decided to put the new trucks at Centerville, Blue Mound and Parker.

Heard a report from Commissioner Vicki Leonard that the landfill had taken in more than $16,120 since it started charging fees Sept. 8. Nearly $6,850 was from selling recyclable materials.

Approved payment of almost $7,020 to Thoele Concrete for the landfill scale project, as well as payment of about $3,230 to KC Freightline for repair of landfill vehicle. The commission also signed off on spending nearly $1,880 to dispose of household hazardous waste material. Landfill Superintendent Joe Maloney reported that this was a four-year collection being sent for processing.

Approved rezoning 5.1 acres from agriculture to agriculture residential for John and Anita Rowe of rural Mound City. Commissioners also approved a lot split and granting of easement for the Rowes.
