Judging by the number of points Jayhawk-Linn junior Jarod Avery has put up in each of the two tournaments he’s wrestled so far this season, one could conclude that the work he put into the weight room this past off-season has paid dividends. The latest evidence came at the Anderson County Wrestling Invitational in Garnett on Saturday. Scoring at least seven points in each of his four wins, out of five total matches, he went on to place third at 152 pounds. Avery dominated early on, opening with a 12-3 major decision over Erie’s Joe Sexton and a 15-4 major decision over Anderson County’s Michael Gigstad in his quarterfinal match. Avery suffered his first loss of the season in his next match, but stormed back to earn a 7-2 decision over Fredonia’s Josh Figgins in the consolation semifinals and an 11-7 decision over Iola’s Devin Culler in the third-place match. Avery improved his overall record to 9-1 with his showing in Garnett. Eli Walrod, a senior, continued to his good start to the season, placing fourth at 285. He needed only a combined two minutes, 21 seconds to pin his first two opponents. After being pinned in the semifinals, he scored his third pin in four matches in the consolation semifinals. The victory advanced Walrod to the third-place match, where we was pinned by Anderson County’s Marcus Ferguson, ranked sixth in Class 4A at 285 pounds. Walrod improved his overall record to 8-2 on the season. Tyler Jenkins (135), a sophomore, and Austin Billingsley (130) and Mason Craig (135), both juniors, each went 0-2. Justin Robertson (160), also a junior, finished 0-4 in his round-robin weight class. Jayhawk-Linn placed ninth in the team standings with 29 points. Jayhawk-Linn learned Monday it will travel to Rossville, Kan., for its Class 3-2-1A regional tournament Feb. 19 and 20. Atchison-Maur Hill Mount, Bennington, Burlingame, Central Heights, Council Grove, Effingham-Atchison County Community, Eskridge-Mission Valley, Highland-Doniphan West, Horton, Leavenworth-Immaculata, Marysville, Minneapolis, Onaga, Oskaloosa, Rossville, Sabetha, St. George-Rock Creek, St. Marys, Troy, Wabaunsee and Wellsville will comprise the remainder of the field.
