LINN VALLEY — The Linn Valley City Council took the first step toward establishing its own fire district last week.

Mayor Dick George on Dec. 14 told City Attorney Gary Thompson to draft a petition to remove Linn Valley from Linn County’s rural fire district because officials were looking at ways to keep money in Linn Valley.

Thompson explained the process of applying to remove the city from the county’s fire taxation district.

The first step is to obtain the signatures of property owners representing 10-percent of the area of the city. Then, the petition would be presented to the Linn County Commission for approval. If it is approved, a resolution would be passed and is published in the official city newspaper for two weeks. People opposing the action would have two weeks to turn in a protest petition including the signatures of property owners representing at least 19 percent of the area of Linn Valley.

Residents in Mound City, Pleasanton and La Cygne pay taxes only for a city fire district and do not pay the county’s rural fire tax.
