TONGANOXIE — Quincy Hodges, a senior, missed the first four events of the season for the Jayhawk-Linn wrestling team to focus on improving his grades.
Hodges appears to have his academic situation up to par. Now, he can to focus on his wrestling. Taking to the mat for the first time this season late last week, he showed why he could be a force come late February, winning six of eight matches, including four of five matches Saturday to place second at 160 pounds at the Tonganoxie Tournament. “Quincy had not been able to practice for over a week as he had other things that needed to get done, and he had not wrestled a match all year. So him coming out Saturday and taking second was great,” Jayhawk-Linn coach Brett Kramer said. “We really just wanted to get him on the mat and get some time wrestling live matches. We were not really concerned on how he placed, but just getting mat time, so getting second was just icing on the cake.” Senior Eli Walrod medaled for the third time in as many tournaments, placing third at 285. He won three of four matches in his pool to advance to the third-place match, where he defeated a Rock Port, Mo., wrestler to earn bronze. Walrod’s only loss came to eventual champion Tyler Ewy of Louisburg. “Eli is making the most of his time in the varsity spot as he has medaled at every tournament this year so far and has a 14-5 record,” Kramer said. Jarod Avery, a junior, won one of four matches at 152. After losing his first two matches, he responded with a pin over his third opponent before losing a close match in his fourth and final match on the day. “He struggled at the start of the tournament,” Kramer said. “He could’ve won those two, but he was just sluggish. He then finished the tournament like we know how we can wrestle.” Jayhawk-Linn placed 11th in the team standings with 51.5 points. Louisburg captured the team title with 302.5 points. Four Jayhawks competed at a junior varsity tournament Friday in Wellsville. Justin Robertson (160) went 2-0. Tyler Jenkins (135) and Mason Craig (130) each went 1-1. Austin Billingsley (125) finished 0-2. Jayhawk-Linn traveled south Thursday to compete at a quad in Iola, and came away with some success. Jenkins, Avery, Hodges and Walrod each went 2-1. Craig won the lone match he wrestled. Billingsley went 0-3. No team scores were kept.
