By the time this column reaches many of you, there will be so much Christmas spirit in the air, you could cut it with a butter knife.

Yes, the Christmas season is one of those special times of the year. It gives everyone an extra reason to spread a little joy and cheer, to make your neighbor or relative happy and to create those special holiday memories. Everyone has them, and at least for me, they are burned deep into my mind; treasured experiences that I will never let go.

While I’ve made some fond memories in the last few years, you would be hard-pressed to find anyone who wouldn’t agree that often the best Christmas experiences are from a person’s childhood. From building snowmen in the backyard to sledding down an icy hill, those memories are always bright spots people can hold on to throughout their life.

In particular, nearly all my favorite Christmas memories occurred when I was visiting my grandparents. I remember my parents and I would make the pilgrimage to their farm just outside of Inman, Kan. It was always a full day of activity and relaxation. With the help of a sturdy sled and a reliable piece of rope, my grandpa would hook me up to his four-wheeler and sling me around the icy fields. Careening left and right through the rutted paths, I held on for dear life with an icy-cold grip and a smile perpetually frozen on my face.

Eventually, he would find a way to shake me free, and after a rough roll and tumble across the hard ground, I managed to get back up, shake it off and beg for a second round.

Yet another Christmas memory that sticks out in my mind was on a trip we took to see my other grandparents, who at the time lived in Henderson, Neb. That year, as in most years in Nebraska, nearly a foot of snow dumped right before Christmas. While this may have dampened the mood of many adults just trying to get around, for an eager five-year-old it was a winter paradise. I jumped and flounced through the snow, making paths and snow sculptures. However, my crowning achievement was the formation of a four-foot wide snowball, built from a small snowball no bigger than my fist, and packed as tight as I could make it. While I had to leave a short day or two after I finished my creation, my grandparents told me that it lasted easily through the early part of March; they eventually had to break it up so they could finally mow their lawn.

Christmas is a time for the four F’s: family, food, friends and fun. It is a time for spreading joy and creating memories, both of which I plan to do my fair share of this season.
